Grandmother Trumps The Pirate

I was going to paint a portrait of a pirate but for the life of me I could not find my reference photo. And then I stumbled on an old photo of my Grandmother.

Her name is Maria. (It's pronounced Mariah like the wind.) It's a beautiful name yet she preferred to be called Mickey. I felt unconditional love from her. It's nice to have her sweet energy in the studio.

I started her this morning. Here's the first statement:

I'll keep posting pics in progress...enjoy~

Second Statement 5/16/10

Wow, she's not nearly done but I feel her love radiating from the painting. It's like having your own private angel in the studio. Ahhhh...

Third Statment 5/24/10

I listened to Hildegard von Bingen and really got in to the zone! Three hours later I emerged with this third statement. What a great experience. I felt like I was sculpting rather than painting.

It's so wonderful having her in the studio. Feels like she's happy to be here too. I'll keep you posted...

Update 6/9/10

Oooh she's getting close. I'm thinking maybe one more time at the canvas. I really don't want to over work her...

Update 6/16/10

She might be done. I'm going to have to let her rest for a bit so I can gather some objectivity.

I so love her smile...
